Mission Statement
The mission of the Carolina Equine Clinic is to provide the highest quality care
for your horse by providing diagnostic services, disease prevention, treatment,
surgery and consultation. Open for business in July of 1977 the clinic has provided
referral services to veterinarians from NC and neighboring states. Horses from
many competition disciplines have been treated as well as pets and pleasure horses.
Services/Business History
We provide preventative medicine as well as dentistry. Surgery cases range from
cosmetic to major procedures under general anesthesia. Prepurchase exams provide
buyers the information they need to decide whether they should purchase or not.
Services are provided either in the clinic or at the owner’s farm. Laboratory
tests, ultrasound and radiographic imaging are routine procedures to provide
an accurate diagnosis.
The Carolina Equine Clinic was started in July of 1977 by Dr McCashin after he had spent 6 years of doing referral surgery at The North Carolina Veterinary Research Foundation in Southern Pines. The Carolina Equine Clinic continues to accept referrals from veterinarians in NC, VA, and SC, but also conducts a general equine practice including preventative medicine and dentistry.
We advertise for externships and internships for recent graduates, and have living quarters for them here at the clinic. We have had several externs and interns over the years most of whom have chosen to stay in equine practice. Dr McCashin is an Adjunct Professor at the Veterinary School at NCSU, and helps present clinical cases to veterinary students from all classes so they can get experiences relating to equine practice.
In an effort to encourage discourse and cooperation between veterinarians, the
facilities at Carolina Equine Clinic are offered to other practitioners on an
as needed basis. Also Dr McCashin has assisted the Southern Pines Equine Associates
as their radiation safety officer for doing bone scans and has done some surgeries
at their facility. It is the express intent of the Carolina Equine Clinic to
offer consultation services to owners and veterinarians alike. The majority of
local cases have been to treat lameness in sport horses. Treatments can range
from joint injections to acupuncture. Surgery is done both in the standing position
and under general anesthesia. Procedures may include tumor removal, cryptorchid
castration, ovariectomy, tie-back, arthroscopy and other orthopedic surgeries
involving bone, joints, tendons, and ligaments. Colic surgeries are referred
to the Veterinary School at NCSU in Raleigh.

Answering our telephone, scheduling appointments, ordering supplies, and many other tasks is Cindy Hudson, pictured here behind the desk. Cindy has a background in race and sport horses as well as employment in the veterinary and medical fields. She brings much pertinent experience to the services offered at the Carolina Equine Clinic.
