Here
in the aptly-named sandhills of North Carolina, horses easily
accumulate large amounts of sand in their colon. Sand is ingested while
grazing or eating hay from the ground, and can cause severe problems
such as weight loss, colic and diarrhea. While the manure can be
examined for sand, this is not always a reliable test to determine a
horse's sand burden. Our veterinarians are experienced at listening with
a stethoscope for the characteristic sound of sand in the colon. This
can be a part of twice-yearly wellness visits, or a separate appointment
can be made if you suspect your horse may have sand accumulation.
