Gastrointesintal / Colic
Colic and gastrointestinal disorders may manifest as colic, diarrhea, weight loss, poor haircoat, and/or changes in appetite. Our veterinarians offer diagnostics and medical treatment for even the most severe of cases. We perform thorough abdominal ultrasound with the MyLab5, an above-industry-standard machine that produces high-resolution images with impeccable detail. We also offer hospitalization for colic, IV fluid therapy, in-house bloodwork and a variety of other advanced diagnostics to determine cause and course of treatment for gastrointestinal disorders.

Respiratory
We offer diagnostics and treatments for a variety of respiratory
disorders affecting horses. We diagnose and treat conditions such as
recurrent airway obstruction ("heaves," a cause of coughing and
difficulty breathing), inflammatory airway disease (a cause of cough in
young horses), pneumonia, pleural effusion (fluid in the chest),
sinusitis (sinus infections) and many more. Respiratory diagnostics
include ultrasound of lungs/chest, trans-tracheal wash, broncho-alveolar
lavage, and upper-airway endoscopy. If your horse coughs, has
difficulty breathing, or has nasal discharge, contact us for an
examination.
Neurologic
Neurologic disorders may cause horses to exhibit a behavior change,
have difficulty eating, trip, stumble, or appear "incoordinated."
Potentially neurologic conditions should be evaluated as soon as they
are noticed, as these conditions may progress rapidly. We are able to
evaluate neurologic symptoms using a complete and thorough examination
with a variety of components. Results of a complete exam allow our
veterinarians to localize a disease process to a particular portion of
the neurologic system and identify potential sources of the problem. We
also offer new and more reliable testing for EPM, including the IFAT
blood test and spinal taps when needed.
Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders
Endocrine and metabolic dysfunction are increasingly common in our
equine patients. Equine Cushing's (Pituitary Pars Intermedia
Dysfunction) and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (Insulin Resistance) are the
most commonly diagnosed diseases of this type. Symptoms of these
diseases include obesity, weight loss, changes in haircoat, attitude
change and onset of laminitis. Carolina Equine Clinic offers screening
tests and advanced diagnostics to identify these conditions, even at
their earliest manifestation. We also offer up-to-date and integrative
therapy for all metabolic disorders, including medications, dietary
management and environmental modification.
Urinary
Urinary tract disorders may cause a horse to strain to urinate, consume
more or less water than normal, pass blood in the urine, become
systemically ill, or suffer a decline in performance. If you suspect
your horse has a problem with the urinary tract, please contact us for
an appointment. Through bloodwork, urinalysis, ultrasound, and
endoscopy, we can thoroughly evaluate the source of urinary tract
dysfunction.

Muscle Disorders
Horses experience many muscle disorders such as rhabdomyolysis ("tying
up"), polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM), shivers, HYPP and many
more. Horses with a muscle problem may tire easily after exercise,
appear stiff or cramp after work, or have difficulty walking or backing.
Our veterinarians can perform exercise testing, collect samples for
genetic analysis and obtain muscle biopsy samples to help diagnose a
muscle disorder.
