Dentistry

Our veterinarians use full-mouth speculums for complete dental examinations. Dental floating is performed with hand floats, or power instruments by request. A dental exam should be performed yearly; most horses will need floating each year.

We also perform tooth extractions, which may be necessary when the root of a tooth becomes rotten. Signs of dental disease that may require an extraction include one-sided nasal discharge, difficulty chewing, and lumps or draining wounds on the jaw or face. Radiographs (X-rays) of the head can be combined with endoscopy and dental examinations to determine location of teeth that may require extraction.
